This past week, in addition to covering the Song of Solomon, the other verses that I brought in were: Genesis 1:27-28 (God created us, marriage and sex. His first command was to “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth.”); Genesis 2:24; Mark 10:6-9; Exodus 20:14; 1 Corinthians 6:18-20; Ephesians 5:3; 1 Thessalonians 4:3-5, 7; Hebrews 13:4 and 1 Corinthians 7:1-6. As you read these you will notice how different this is from what the world bombards us with about sex. God calls us to be holy and pure.
In the book, His Needs, Her Needs, [Building and Affair-Proof Marriage] William Harley, Jr. (PhD. Clinical Psychologist and author of many books on marriage) identifies the five basic needs that most husbands expect their wives to meet and the five basic needs each wife expects her husband to meet. Here’s the list. (I think you can get the book free on ebooks.)
Gary Thomas has written several great books on marriage and other subjects. Here is a free resource:
The Challenge is this:
- If you are NOT married, stay pure. If you are past that point, go to our gracious, merciful God and ask Him for forgiveness. Then stay pure. God will bless you for your obedience and purity.
- [Warning: this challenge is only for healthy married adults. Merry Ministries is not responsible for any cardiac arrests, etc.] If you are married, the challenge is different. Since most guys are interested in both quantity and quality, double up on what you are doing for 1 month. (2 X 2= 4, but 0 X 2 = at least once in this case.) In addition to doubling the number, (which should keep some of you very busy) put some effort into one super-special event this month. Have fun!!! If you and/or your husband are not able to do this, think of something else meaningful to strengthen your relationship.
Sex is an effective neurological “glue” that helps hold relationships together. It must be applied and reapplied regularly. Dr. Juli Flattery says that the “gift” of sex is more like a Legos set than a finished toy–you have to build it, rebuild it, and put some effort into fully enjoying it. Her website (Authentic Intimacy) addresses many very personal sexual questions from a Christian perspective. She is associated with Focus on the Family. You might want to check out her books, Passionate Pursuit or Intimate Issues.
